On Mac go to PhpStorm → Preferences → Version Control.
On Linux go to File → Settings → Version Control
Click on “+”-Button and select the folder containing the GIT repository and make sure you selected GIT as VCS. Don't forget to click on the “Apply” buttons to make these changes permanent.
